Parade and Carriage Ride

Wedding Day - 26 September 2000 - Tuesday

We recollected ourselves and proceeded to stroll through the gardens outside the palace.  We were walking with the destination of our horse carriages.  The day, was glorious.  The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky.  (Not bad when it was predicted to be raining by the weatherman).

We were greeted by all, as we strolled arm and arm in the town.  Andy stood tall and proud, never leaving my side.  The whole town of Salzburg seemed to have attended our wedding.  Photos were taken of us, people stopped and clapped, men raised their hats.

We were serenaded by the noon church bells as we walked through the city of Salzburg.  Our timing could not have been any better.  We stopped to take a photo of us crossing the Salz River, with the Fortress high above the city.

We reached the Residenz, where the carriage rides awaited us.

We took out two carriages.  Andy, his Mom, Allie and myself in the front carriage.  Dad and the rest were in the carriage behind us.  Andy had distributed the champagne and glasses.

And we were off!

The champagne had been popped, and the smiles were all around.  The sunshine was so warming, the well wishes and toasts so plentiful, it was Cinderella taking her fairytale ride with Prince Charming.  We rode through the old town of Salzburg, our guide giving some historic comments as we passed by buildings of over 700 years old.

The ride was so calming, so absolutely perfect.

As the dream ride came to an end, we stopped outside the Palace to begin our journey of celebration.  As we were stepping off the carriage, poor Allie sat down on an empty champagne glass and cracked it to pieces.  We laughed, then quickly turned to concern that she had not hurt herself.  It looked as if she was going to be fine, she had just torn her dress, but no serious damage to her bum!

Mary and Allie laughed so hard as comments were said that Allie was "getting desperate in her old age."  "It had been four years since Joe had passed away", Mary and Allie howled together.  Andy and I laughed so hard tears came to our eyes.  To picture these two seventy year old women dressed to their finest, making such fun of themselves, was just the antidote to break some of the negative comments that had been shot my way throughout the afternoon.

We were off, driving in the city to the bakery to pick up the cake.  Andy pulled in front of the bakery and disappeared into the shop.  He arrived within seconds, descending the few stairs from the bakery.  He looked so handsome and boyish at the same time. Once inside the car, I had to peek at the cake.

The cake was made that morning.  It was a petite two tier smoothly iced work of art.  It had flowers that resembled dogwoods cascading down the side.  It was absolutely perfect.
